WHITE, MELVIN R.

Corporal Melvin Ralph White, 19, son of Mr. and Mrs. Hanford White of Eaton, was killed [July 28, 1944] in the line of duty during the battle for Guam, his parents learned Thursday.

Cpl. White served with a U.S. Marine Corps unit in the Pacific area, and was in the battle for Saipan and later transferred to Guam. A letter from a Marine Corps lieutenant told of his death, but gave no date.

Cpl. White left in March, 1943, for active Marine training, and was trained at San Diego, Calif., and later assigned to Camp Pendleton at Oceanside, Calif. He earlier attended a welding school in Portland, Ore., and was employed by the commercial shipyards there.

He left Eaton while in the eleventh grade at Eaton High School, to do defense work.

Cpl. White was born April 28, 1926, in Eaton.

Survivors include his parents, a brother, William H. White, Eaton High School student, his grandmother, Mrs. Martha J. Keeton of Eaton, and several uncles and aunts, many of whom live in the Eaton community.
