VOLZ, CHARLES, JR.
Funeral services for Marine Sgt. Charles Volz, formerly of 2121 W. 69th Pl., who was killed in the battle of Iwo Jima March 10, 1945, at the age of 22, were held yesterday in the chapel at 5112 Western Ave., with military honors performed by South Chicago’s Own Detachment, an organization of Marine veterans of World War II. Burial was in Evergreen Park Cemetery.
The holder of seven battle stars for service in two battles on Guadalcanal, two battles on Bougainville, the Battle of the Midway, the Solomon Islands and Iwo Jima, Sergeant Volz was attached to the Fifth Division, 28th Marines. He entered the Marine Corps in January 1942 after his graduation from Harper High School.
He is survived by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Volz, of the 69th Pl. address, a sister, Mrs. William Erickson, 6826 May St., and two nieces.
