MURPHY, DANIEL B.
Mr. and Mrs. J. V. Murphy, 430 Van Buren Street, Twin Falls, have been informed by the Navy Department that their son, Sgt. Daniel B. Murphy, was killed in action March 7 [1945] with the Third Marine Division on Iwo Jima.
Sergeant Murphy entered service with the Marines on Oct. 9, 1940. He took boot training at San Diego, Calif., and then served for two and one-half years on the aircraft carrier Saratoga.
In April, 1943, he was transferred to [First] Marine Raiders and served with them until June, 1944, when he came to Twin Falls on a 30-day leave. Following his leave he trained recruits in commando tactics at Camp Pendleton, Calif., and in October, 1944, he volunteered for replacement and left for overseas service.
Aside from his parents he is survived by a brother, Pfc. Robert B. Murphy, now serving with the U.S. Army in Germany; a sister, Viola, who is living here with her parents; his grandmother, Mrs. Hannah Murphy, Twin Falls, and a sister at Grand Island, Neb.
