MAXWELL, HEBER D.

Heber Douglas Maxwell, 80, died Sunday, Sept. 16, 2001, at the West Tennessee Veterans Home, Humboldt, Tenn.

Mr. Maxwell was born Aug. 20, 1921, in Mountain City, Tenn., and was the son of Truman and Tisha Howard Maxwell.

He served 20 years in the United States Marine Corps between May 1940 and July 1960, achieving the rank of Gunnery Sergeant. He was a combat photographer. He was a veteran of World War II and Korea. His foreign service also included Guadalcanal, New Georgia, Bougainville, Newfoundland, Iceland, Panama, Japan, Korea, the Philippines and Okinawa.

He received the following awards: Good Conduct Medal with one Silver Star, Asiatic Defense Service Medal with fleet clasp, American Campaign Medal, Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal with three stars, World War II Victory Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Korean Service Medal with four stars, United Nations Service Medal, Korean Presidential Unit Citation, and Presidential Unit Citation with one star.

In his civilian life, he worked for the Department of Agriculture as a photographer. He was of the Protestant faith and was a 32nd Degree Mason.

Survivors include his wife, Phyllis Maxwell, Memphis, Tenn., one daughter, Cheryl Colson, Memphis, Tenn., three half-brothers, Glenn Maxwell and Truman Maxwell, both of Mountain City, Tenn., and David Vaught, Johnson City, Tenn., one sister, Dwanna Carter, Elizabethton, Tenn., two half-sisters, Jewel Collins, Johnson City, Tenn., and Eva Maxwell, Mountain City, Tenn., and one grandchild.

Mr. Maxwell will be cremated at Arrington Funeral Directors & Crematory with a memorial service at a later date. A private burial will be at Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, Va.
