MACKINNON, GEORGE V.

Beverly — George V. Mackinnon, 87, beloved husband of Jennie J. (Curcuru) Mackinnon, died Friday, June 7 [2013], at the Beverly Hospital.

Born and raised in Prince Edward Island, Canada, he was the son of the late Nelson and Grace (MacNevin) Mackinnon.

George was a member of Carlson’s Raiders of the 2nd Marine Raiders Battalion, an elite unit established to conduct amphibious warfare and said to be the first United States special operations forces to see combat in World War II. George participated in action on the South Pacific islands of Bougainville, Emirau and Guam, until he was wounded in action and awarded the Purple Heart.

After his honorable discharge in 1945, George returned to Beverly and worked in an array of jobs until 1975, when he was appointed deputy sheriff by Essex County Sheriff Robert Cahill.

George served as a deputy sheriff for Essex County until 1979, when the state assumed control of the judicial system and designated him as a court officer for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.

During his tenure as court officer, George was assigned to the Salem District Court, Salem Superior Court and Lawrence Superior Court until his retirement in 1992. He was named Court Officer of the Year in 1976 to 1977. George briefly came out of retirement to serve in the Gloucester District Court in 2001.

A longtime resident of the City of Beverly, he was a member of the Beverly Elks and the Italian Community Center.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by two daughters, Donna Mackinnon of Peabody and Georgeann Mackinnon of Alpena, Mich.; two step-sons, Brian and Gary Glidden, both of Gloucester; 10 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. He was also the father of the late Deborah Mackinnon, husband of the late Phyllis Mackinnon, and brother of the late John Mackinnon, Mary Daley and Jean Connors.

A memorial service will be held at the Campbell–Lee, Moody, Russell Funeral Home, 525 Cabot St., North Beverly, on Wednesday, at 5 p.m. Relatives and friends are invited to attend.
