LIPPOLD, JACK E.

Marine Corporal Jack Lippold, one of the four soldiers who planted the American flag atop Mount Suribachi, was killed [February 21, 1945] on Iwo Jima. Though his parents, Mr. and Mrs. John Lippold, now live in Phoenix, Arizona, he was reared in Wymore. On Iwo he served with the Fifth Division.

He participated in the battles on Bougainville, Midway and Guadalcanal, and was a member of Carlson’s Raiders which spent 34 days behind enemy lines.

His only brother, Lester, was killed in an airplane crash last fall.

Historian’s note: Cpl. Lippold was KIA two days prior to the Iwo Jima flag raisings on 23 February 1945.
