LEWIS, GEORGE B.
Mr. George Byrd “Runt” Lewis, Jr., age 81, a native of Marengo County, AL and a longtime resident of Mobile, died on Thursday, September 5, 2002 at a local health care facility.
He was a member of Springhill Avenue United Methodist Church and member of Masonic Lodge for 51 years St. Albans Lodge #22 F&AM, veteran of World War II while serving in the United States Marine Corps serving in the Pacific with Edson’s Raiders. He was awarded the Bronze Star with Valor by Vice Admiral with the U.S. Navy J. H. Newton. He was a life long member of VFW Post 49, a member of the American Legion #88 and Marine Corps League.
He was founder and president of George B. Lewis Timber & Company, Inc. and the L&L Saw & Cycle Shop, Inc. and also Lewis Realty, Inc. He retired in 1990 due to poor health.
He is survived by his wife Hazel G. “Tinsey”’ Lewis of Mobile; children, Karen (Frederick) Greis of Long Island, NY, Audrey (David) Gabel of Mobile, George B. Lewis, III of Mobile, Robert Derry (Pam) Lewis of Lucedale, MS; five grandchildren, Rachel D’leigh Lores, Brent A. Lewis, Megan L. Lewis, John L. Gabel, Nathaniel D. Lewis; one great-grandchild, Dustin A. Lewis; nieces and nephews, with special thanks to niece Charlotte Fowler for her nursing abilities and Mercy Medical Hospital for their love, care and compassion.
Full Military Services for Major George B. Lewis, Jr., USMCR will be held on Saturday, September 7, 2002 at 3PM from the chapel of Radney Funeral Home. Visitation will be on Saturday from 1-3PM at the funeral home. Interment will be in Pine Crest Cemetery.
