LANE, ROBERT M.

Melbourne Beach–Robert M. Lane “Bob” went to his Heavenly Home March 29th, 2012, at age 88, with his family at his side. He was born July 10, 1923, in Little Rock, Arkansas.

He is survived by his wife of 60 years, his son and daughter, their spouses, two grandsons, and one granddaughter.

He served his country as a U.S. Marine, fought in World War II in Guadalcanal and again on Iwo Jima where as part of Company E Marine Raiders raised the American flag on top of Mount Surabachi. He received a Purple Heart for his heroic actions. He is an American treasure who fought for our freedom.

He graduated from Arkansas Tech College, and worked in the pharmaceutical industry for over 30 years. After retiring he joined the Rotary Club of Melbourne Beach, and was instrumental in building a medical clinic in Costa Rica in conjunction with his local Rotary Club and the San Jose Costa Rica Rotary in the little town of Punta Baneo, Pavones, Puntarenas, Costa Rica, which stands today. He was honored with the 75th International Paul Harris Fellow Award and Rotarian of the Year. Bob and his wife are members of the Community Chapel of Melbourne Beach. He and his wife traveled around the world, and he was passionate about sailing the Indian River, with his kids and grandkids.

His memorial service is being held at The Community Chapel of Melbourne Beach, 501 Ocean Ave, Melbourne Beach, FL 32951, Sunday, April 1, 2012 at 5 PM.
