FROST, WILLIAM G.
The first Hancock County man reported to have died in the bloody battle of Okinawa is Marine Pfc. William G. Frost.
The 20-year-old Marine died in the deadly Pacific island struggle May 25 [1945], according to a War Department message received by his mother, Mrs. Ethel Arthur, Route 1, Greenfield, on Monday.
No details of Pfc. Frost’s death were received. The telegram advised that additional information would be received as soon as it became available.
Pfc. Frost was a student in the Greenfield High School when he volunteered for service in the U.S. Marine Corps and was inducted through the Hancock County Selective Service Board, March 31, 1941.
He received his basic training at San Diego, Calif., and was sent to Hawaii, where he was stationed several months. He was returned to the United States and after spending a furlough here he was reassigned to duty in the Southwest Pacific, where he participated in several major battles.
Surviving besides his mother is his father, Russell Frost, of Indianapolis, and one brother, Lieut. James Frost, now stationed with the Marines at Cherry Point, N.C.
Lieut. Frost was home recently on leave, after seeing several months of action in the Pacific.
