ROCK VALLEY, Iowa — Paul Beumer, 77, of Rock Valley died Friday, Jan. 3, 2003, at Avera McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls, S.D.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Rock Valley. Burial will be in St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery. Visitation will be today until 5 p.m. at Porter Funeral Home in Rock Valley. There will be a prayer service at 7 p.m. today at the church.

Paul was born Sept. 17, 1925, at Rock Valley, the son of Sebastian and Margaret (Casey) Beumer. He entered the U.S. Marines on his 17th birthday, serving 30 months in the Southwest Pacific Theater during World War II. He was awarded the Bronze Star and Purple Heart and was a member of the Marine Raiders which became part of the Sixth Marine Division.

Paul married Elaine Miller on Oct. 19, 1946, at Rock Valley. They lived at Rock Valley where Paul was a clerk for the U.S. Postal Service for 18 years before becoming postmaster in 1965 until his retirement in 1977. Paul then worked at Jonker’s Furniture for 10 years.

He was active at St. Mary’s Church, being past chairman of the parish council and singing in the choir for more than 50 years.

Survivors include his wife, Elaine; five daughters, Eloise Hybertson of Centerville, S.D., Pat and her husband, Bill Hassebroek of Inwood, Iowa, Debra and her husband, John Schulte of Sioux Falls, Mary and her husband, Louie Le Blanc of St. Cloud, Minn., and Beth and her husband, Paul Anderson of Glenwood, Iowa; a son, Mike and his wife, Brenda Beumer of Urbandale, Iowa; a brother, Francis “F.L.” and his wife, Pattie Beumer of Oak Hurst, Calif.; a sister, Margaret and her husband, Bob Brower of Roseville, Calif.; a sister-in-law, Connie Beumer of Sioux Falls; 15 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, Paul was preceded in death by a son-in-law, Dean Hybertson; two brothers, Bernard and James; an infant sister, Mary; and a sister and brother-in-law, Viva and Alan McCollum.
