BALDWIN, ROBERT E.

Memorial service for Robert E. Baldwin, 83, will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday in the Sunset Chapel at Fairmount Memorial Park. Thornhill Valley Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Born in Spokane, Mr. Baldwin died Tuesday [December 1, 2000].

In 1935 he graduated from Lewis and Clark High School. He later graduated from the University of Southern California.

Mr. Baldwin served in the Marine Corps for 30 years. From 1940 to 1942 he served with the Marine expedition in Iceland with the Spokane Reserves 14th Battalion. During World War II he was a member of the Carlson Raiders’ Second Battalion and received a Purple Heart after the Bougainville Campaign in [1943].

In 1945 he served at the Sandpoint Naval Air Station in Seattle and in 1946 with the Ninth Marines in China. He earned his wings as a glider pilot in 1947. From 1948 to 1949 he was an inspector with the Spokane Reserves Infantry Unit. He also served during the Korean War and was awarded a Bronze Star. He retired in 1968 and returned to Spokane.

Mr. Baldwin was a member of the Raider Association, the China Marines Association, the Marine Corps League First Marine Division, the A-1-5 Association and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 51.

Survivors include his wife of 56 years, Mary; a son, Robert Baldwin, and a daughter, Linda Stowe, both of Spokane; and three grandchildren.
