GREEN, BERNARD W.

Major Bernard W. Green, 26, U.S. Marine Corps, son of Mr. and Mrs. Bernard Green, of Gradyville, was killed in action April 15 [1945], on Okinawa. He was awarded the Silver Star medal last July for holding the beachhead at Guam with his unit in the face of intensive enemy fire until reinforcements arrived.

In service 4 1/2 years, Maj. Green trained at Quantico, Va., going overseas three years ago, although returning home last fall on a brief furlough.

He saw action at Guadalcanal, Midway, Makin, Bougainville, Guam and Okinawa. A graduate of Media High School and St. Joseph’s College, Philadelphia, he was employed by the Sun Shipbuilding and Dry Dock Company prior to entering the Marines. Major Green was a communicant of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary Catholic Church, of Media.

Survivors besides his parents include one sister, Miss Ruth Ann Green, a student at Chestnut Hill College, and his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. William Tice, of Gradyville. His father is employed as a chauffeur for Walter Jeffords, of Edgmont Township, millionaire sportsman.
