FITZGERALD, CHARLES L.

Reburial services will be held at 9 o’clock Friday morning at St. Lawrence Catholic Church for Sgt. Charles L. Fitzgerald, son of Mr. and Mrs. John Fitzgerald, 520 Thirteenth Avenue north, whose body will arrive here Thursday morning under military escort. The Rev. Peter Rombalski is to officiate and burial will take place in Calvary Cemetery, with military rites by Hagerstrom-Rude Post No. 9, American Legion.

Sgt. Fitzgerald lost his life March 1, 1945, on Iwo Jima while serving with the Fifth Marine Division, after having been slightly wounded in action a week earlier.

He was born in Ladysmith on May 19, 1919, and spent his boyhood in Milwaukee, Wisconsin Rapids and Wautoma. Prior to his entrance into the Marine Corps in December, 1941, he was employed by the Green Bay & Western Railroad. He received his Marine training at San Diego and Camp Elliott, Cal., before going overseas in the spring of 1942. He served with Carlson’s Raiders for 21 months, taking part in the Makin, Guadalcanal, Munda and Bougainville campaigns.

Besides his parents he is survived by three brothers, Hugh, Milwaukee; Allen, Wautoma, and Arthur, Montana, and five sisters, Mrs. Harold Heaton, Eagle River; Mrs. Isabelle Schanes and Mrs. William Luchinske, Wisconsin Rapids; Everesta, Milwaukee, and Doris, at home.

Prayers will be said at the Krohn and Berard Funeral home at 7:30 Thursday evening by the St. Lawrence Rosary Society.
